  • E-waste means waste electrical and electronics equipment, whole or part or reject from their manufacturing and repair process which are discarded

E-waste in India

  • According to central pollution control board, India has generated 10 lakh tonnes of e-waste in 2019-20 which was 7 lakh tonnes in 2017 – 18. According to ASSOCHAM-EY report, electronic waste is estimated 5 million tonnes in 2021.
  • E - Parisaraa Pvt. Ltd, Bengaluru, India’s first Government authorized electronic waste recycler started operations from September 2005 is engaged in handling, recycling and reusing of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) in ecofriendly way.

The following entities shall register on the following portal.

1.    Manufacturer
Producer
Refurbisher
Recycler

Responsibilities of manufacturer

  • Register on portal
  • Collect e-waste generated during manufacturing of any electrical and electronics equipment and ensuring recycling or disposal
  • File annual and quarterly returns on the portal

Responsibilities of producer

  • Register on portal
  • creating awareness through media, publications, advertisements, posters or by any other means of communication
  • File annual and quarterly returns on the portal

Responsibilities of Refurbisher

  • Register on portal
  • Collect e-waster generated during the process of refurbishing and hand over the waster to registered recycler and upload on the portal
  • File annual and quarterly returns on the portal

Responsibilities of recycler

  • Register on portal
  • Ensure that the facility and recycling processes are in accordance with the standards or guidelines laid down by the Central Pollution Control Board
  • Accept waste electrical and electronic equipment or components and uploaded on the portal
  • Ensure that the fractions or material not recycled in its facility is sent to respective registered recycler
  • Ensure that residue generated during recycling process is disposed of in an authorized treatment storage disposal facility`
  • Maintain record of e-waste collected, dismantled, recycled and sent to registered recycler on the portal
  • File annual and quarterly returns
  • Create awareness through media, publications, advertisements, posters or by such other means of communication
  • Upload information about any non-recyclable e-waste or any quantity which is not recycled and disposed
  • Take help of dismantlers for recycling purposes
