Torque

Torque

  • It is defined as the force that gives rise to rotational motion. It is equal to force times radius through which it acts.

       T = F × r

      Where

      T = torque ( Newton meter or Lb – ft )

      F = Force ( Newton )

      r = Radius of lever ( meter )

  • Torque in rotational system is analogous to force in translational system.
  • The torque varies inversely with rotational speed.
  • For example 50 HP motor operating at 3200 Rpm produces torque of 100 Lb – ft ( pound foot ).
  • The same motor produces torque of 200 Lb – ft at 1600 RPM.

       1 Lb – ft = 1.35582 Newton meter
