Step down Chopper
  • The average output DC voltage is always less than the input DC voltage.
  • The switching device is connected in series with load.
  • The average output voltage Vo = a VDC
                                      Where VDC = Input DC voltage

Step up Chopper
  • The average output DC voltage is always greater than the input DC voltage. The switching device is connected in parallel with load.
  • The average output voltage Vo =  VDC  / ( 1 – a )
                                     Where VDC = Input DC voltage
                                                     a = Duty Cycle
  • Regenerative braking of motor operation
  • Second quadrant operation
  • Application : Voltage booster / Battery charging
  • Type B chopper is an example of step up chopper
